CARE FOR WHAT YOU’VE CHANGED · 4 MIN READ

A beautiful kitchen.
A little everyday care.

How to care for your kitchen after a remodel, starting with the materials you actually have.

Before the packaging and paperwork disappear, save the product names, finishes, receipts and care instructions in one folder. A pale, veined countertop might need very different care from another that looks almost identical.

Start with the instructions for the exact installed product and finish. Check the installer’s notes for anything you need to avoid at first. If the instructions conflict, ask the supplier before trying a cleaner. This guide is a starting point for that conversation, not a substitute for your product instructions.

Know what your countertop is

For natural stone, identify the stone and any treatment before choosing a cleaner. The Natural Stone Institute notes that acidic products, including vinegar and lemon, can etch calcium-based stones. Abrasive cleaning products can scratch some surfaces. Its general advice is to use a suitable gentle cleaner, then rinse and dry. Follow the directions for your exact product. Do not automatically put every stone counter on an annual sealing schedule. Some stones need no sealer; others may benefit. Ask the stone supplier which treatment, if any, suits yours and when to review it. Sealing can improve stain resistance, but it does not make stone stain-proof. Engineered quartz has its own manufacturer instructions. For example, Cambria directs owners to use a soft cotton cloth and warm water, with mild soap if desired, and says not to apply sealers or topical treatments. If your counter is another brand or finish, check its own care sheet before using the same method. Cambria product-care instructions

Heat resistance is another product-specific limit. Cambria recommends a suitable hot pad or solid trivet between its surface and hot cookware or heat-producing appliances. Keep the required protection near where you actually cook. Cambria product-care FAQ

Give cabinets their own routine

Cabinet finishes deserve separate instructions from countertops. KraftMaid, for example, recommends gentle cleaning, prompt spill removal and thorough drying, especially near sinks and dishwashers. It cautions against abrasives and leaving wet towels draped over cabinet doors. Confirm the approved cleaner for your own cabinet finish before adding a polish, degreaser or spray to the routine. Three quick tips

  1. Keep a clean drying cloth near the sink. Make drying splashes from cabinet fronts part of your cleanup, rather than leaving moisture behind.
  2. Give trivets a convenient home. Store the protection specified for your counter close to the cooking area, so using it is easy.
  3. Save the exact label, not just the color name. Photograph packaging and keep the product code, finish and current care sheet together. Do the same for tile, grout, flooring and fixtures; counter instructions do not cover them.

Your kitchen care record

Copy this small worksheet into a note or print it for your care folder. Leave unknown details blank and ask your supplier. Record a maintenance interval only when the relevant instructions specify one.
