Light is part of the color decision

Natural light, artificial lighting and the paint’s finish can change how a color appears. Sherwin-Williams explains that the same paint can look different across rooms and throughout the day. A sample is more useful in your home than on a screen.

Try a simple room check

Place samples where the finished color will be seen. Look at them in daylight and again with the lights you normally use in the evening. Write down what changes and which version you prefer. You are choosing for the room’s daily conditions.

Look at the surrounding materials

Set your shortlisted colors beside the flooring, cabinet finish and other surfaces you plan to keep. Give each combination space. If several samples crowd one another, narrow the selection and look again with fresh eyes.

Confirm the finish, too

Gloss and sheen affect the way a painted surface reflects light. Ask to see or test the intended finish, and confirm the product is appropriate for the surface. Record the complete product, color and finish so the final selection is unambiguous.
